Our Mission & History
EURAD is a European non profit drug policy network that advocates for prevention, treatment and recovery oriented drug policies at the national and international level.
EURAD subscribes to a preventionist platform. Our mission is to to reduce the burden of problems caused by non-medical drug use to individuals, families and communities through public health oriented policies that seek to prevent drug use, offer early intervention, provide access to health, treatment and social reintegration services and support recovery from drug use. The Association aims further to strive for a society free from non-medicinal use of drugs. Our vision is to strive for a society free from non-medicinal use of drugs.
We respect the fact that internationally there are important historic, cultural and social differences that impacts on how we talk about drugs and drug policy. We respect that people come into this policy field with very different backgrounds, motifs, experiences and perspectives
EURAD was launched at a press conference in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 25th October in 1988. A constitutional meeting was convened on the 7th-9th April 1989 in Berlin, funded by the European Commission, formally establishing EURAD.
EURAD was registered as a foundation ("stichting") under Dutch law (reg. number: 41155759) until 2019.
In 2019 EURAD registered as an Non Governmental Association (ASBL) under Belgian law. The Association is a network of not-for-profit legal entities and natural persons.
The governing body of EURAD ASBL is the Annual General Meeting. Day-to-day operations are managed by an elected board.
