On 10th June, EURAD’s Secretary General attended the UN intersessional on drugs, which is a planning meeting for the forthcoming Commission of Narcotic Drugs in 2015.
10th June 2014
This one-day session focused on the themes of drug container programmes, drug prevention, alternative development and civil society engagement in the UNGASS 2016 process.
There was a presentation by the Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs about civil society engagement, followed by an intervention by two separate NGOs. The first intervention was delivered by Fay Watson, of EURAD, on the need for ensuring a fair and equitable civil society engagement process which takes into account geographical diversity, diversity of opinion on drug policy issues and diversity in the area of work covered by NGOs (i.e. prevention, harm reduction, drug treatment, recovery and social integration). The second intervention was delivered by Katherine Pettus, on behalf of Human Rights Watch, who spoke of the need to ensure access to essential medicines.
